World Tour (1/3) – Mecenate Fine Art Gallery, Rome, Italy

Summary: Faerian’s “Chapter 1: Light” collection was exhibited in Mecenate Fine Art Gallery in Rome, Italy, during March 21st – March 25th, with the physical presence of the curator Cynthia and a live activation of the artist Tomas Duchek.

One week after the release of the art collection “Chapter 1: Light”, I flew to Italy to showcase it at the first NFT gallery of Rome, the Mecenate Fine Art Gallery (MFA). Accompanying me was Tomas Duchek, one of our featured artists.

The Gallery

Located in the southern part of the city, this gallery opened in 2022 and has hosted several NFT and physical art exhibitions, including artists from the Sloika platform. MFA was founded by four brothers, and during my visit, I had the opportunity to meet two of them on-site, Emmanuel and Paolo.

The space was semi-privatized for us for five days, during which seven large screens continuously rotated the artworks of our “Chapter 1: Light” collection, while some printed photographs from other artists hung on the walls.

Our collection also features physical artworks by Aelin Laer, which were displayed as pictures, in the same way as the digital artworks.

In addition to the screen displays, Tomas brought exclusive hand-signed prints, as well as artist proof cards from the Magic the Gathering game (Wizards of the Coast), to offer to new collectors. Artist proof cards are different from the regular game cards as their backs are white, and they are not sold publicly, but offered to the artist who designed the artworks on them. Tomas has designed more than 30 illustrations for MTG.

On my side, I brought Displate metal prints of Tomas’ artwork “Dweller”, printed artbooks, business cards, and I even wore a special, unique dress, made from the artwork “Crystolaria” from Winterkeep. Who said art has to stay on the walls? I loved showcasing all the small details of the dress, such as as tiny birds close to the shoulders, the two layers of forest, and the shining crystal in both the front and the back, reminding me of the animated movie “Atlantis: The Lost Empire”.

Meeting the Artist

I had the pleasure to finally meet the artist Tomas Duchek IRL (in real life) for the first time. He flew all the way from the Czech Republic with his family to be part of the exhibition. After months of exchanging emails, it was really heartwarming to see him trust Faerian enough to travel to a faraway country.

He’s a kind soul, peaceful and composed, a good husband and father, far from the idea of the tortured artist we often think of. I really enjoy every moment we shared during that week.

Live Art Activation

During the 5-day exhibition, Tomas painted a brand new digital piece on Photoshop. His laptop was connected to a larger screen, so that visitors could watch his ongoing artistic process at any time. Starting from scratch with a blank page, he explored silhouettes and drew inspiration from what he saw in Rome during the day, as well as other references on the Internet. For those wondering, no AI was used. Tomas wasn’t sure what to draw, so he let the idea came to him during the painting process. Observing his journey was just as interesting as the resulting piece.

Most people (even me back then) had never seen a digital artist painting in real life, making it quite the attraction. Regardless of the day visitors attended, whether Tuesday or Friday, there was always something new to see. What would the piece turn out to be?

One of the advantages of digital paintings is that you can separate layers of your work. If you want to show only the first layer of outlines, you can temporarily hide the upper layers. Or, if you want to make radical changes to the color composition, you can revert it faster than with physical painting.

As a pivotal center for the arts for centuries, with its rich history and cultural heritage, Rome was a perfect place to start our world tour. To be exhibited in the city where the ancient and modern worlds blend seamlessly was an honor for me and all our artists.

Where are you?
“I am painting live and presenting my work here in this exhibition of Mecenate Fine Art with NFTs for Faerian.”

How does it feel to be exhibited in a real gallery?

“It’s exciting, definitely. I always work from home, from my office, alone. I’m feeling the loneliness sometimes, so it’s nice to meet people. It’s a different environment for me, so I appreciate it.”

How did you react the first time you saw your art on the big screen?
“It definitely looks much better than I expected. Couple of times, I try to print out my work, but that is not as visually stunning, I would say, or attractive. So I appreciate the screens as well, definitely, I like that.”

Can you explain us your artistic process?
“I am making a new piece, and I’m usually starting with a silhouette. The idea comes from an exploration usually.

Here, I can show you the silhouette. Then I refine it, and add some lines to it. Usually the process is changing, it’s not always the same. But here, I started like this, and then I added a couple of colors, flat colors into it.

I’m going to be continuing with the separation of light and shadow, and kind of develop the painting from there. I always like to play with light, so I tend to explore various materials and light settings, so that I get an interesting scene this way. This is obviously a cheesy start, because I have a lantern there, so it should be a fun exercise to play with, illuminating this object, and casting the light on his face and his clothes. That’s the focal point, and then I think I’m going to add tree branches and woods, behind it, like really wild, almost unnaturally thick and entangled. So I’m hoping to have some kind of strange, scary forest environment this way.”

Paolo, Victoria, Tomas and Cynthia. Thank you for a great week!
