Prayer for the Wandjina

This artwork is the final submission from the artist JORN for the ‘Humanity’ event by the Faerian gallery. The artist created this piece in 3 days, inspired by a prompt that was submitted by the public. In a unique twist, instead of being interpreted by an AI, this time the prompt was brought to life by a human artist. The entire creative process was livestreamed online and at the NFC Lisboa event.

Original Prompt Text

Original prompt text
Prompt by Rainbow Mosho (Twitter: RainbowMosho)
— ‘Kylie is an aborigene girl from Australia – her name means boomerang – and she sends messages to the government and population wanting to heighten awareness about bushfires in the Kuranda rainforest – especially after a deadly one that killed her grandma Medika and it stopped after Kyle prayed for Wandjina the spirits of the wind and rain’
Was AI used?
— No

How is your final artwork related to the prompt?
— EN: I wanted to represent the Wandjina prayer.

After a lot of research on the aborigines of Australia, I took their symbols and their colors. Ground, mountains, forest, fire, rain, wandjina, etc. are illustrated with these symbols.

In the foreground we find Kylie praying with flowing tears because of the death of her grandmother. On Kylie’s outfit you can find some of the aboriginal symbols.

In the background we find the landscape, cut into three elements:
1) Down (smoke to forest)
Brings some depth and makes Kylie stand out from the artwork.
– Represents red on the Australian Aboriginal flag (land).

2) In the center
The yellow + sun aura represents the call to the deities in addition to also recalling the sun’s rays and their intensities.
– Represents the yellow circle on the Australian Aboriginal flag (the sun)

3) Up (fire to sky)
We can see the Wandjina calling the rain (which is symbolized behind)
– Depicts black on the Australian Aboriginal flag (black skin)

The grandmother is represented via the elongated body in the middle of the scene (black for “charred”) with rays from bottom to top to show an aspect of ascension, path to the beyond or what there is After.

There is a good contrast between the line of fire and the forest. Kylie’s message is therefore transcribed via this illustration.

We see a little girl praying, we see the fire, the forest, a lying body. From my point of view, we understand the scene quickly and well.

The effect and use of symmetry is typical of my art and intentional. This provides a stabilized reading while having many elements present.

Why did you choose this prompt?
— Because the prompt tells a story

Explain more your creative process:
— To begin with I did a lot of research on Australian Aborigines: their faces, their symbols, their colors, etc.

Artistic level I started to scribble on a paper the elements. I started mainly from the flag of the aborigines.

Then I created the whole scene on AIllustrator in vector to have marked lines, equal and almost perfect symmetry.
I export to PNG. I switch to Procreate (Ipad), I import the PNG and I start to colorize some elements. Then comes the moment when I move on to drawing. I rely on the existing structure and I have fun, I make shapes, I test, in short…. I have fun! At the end, I harmonize a little all the colors, I do what editing, I sign and finish.
