This artwork is the final submission from the writer artist Lazolia Buzuzi for the ‘Humanity’ event by the Faerian gallery. The artist created this short story in 3 days, inspired by a prompt that was submitted by the public. In a unique twist, instead of being interpreted by an AI, this time the prompt was brought to life by a human artist writer. The entire creative process was livestreamed online and at the NFC Lisboa event.

Original Prompt Text

Prompt by Cristina Rigoselli (Twitter: Cristina Rigoselli )
— ‘Prompt: The Essence of Connection

Description: In a world driven by technology and digital interactions, the essence of connection is often overlooked or undervalued. For this art contest, I want artists to explore and depict the multifaceted nature of human connection. Whether it’s the connection between individuals, communities, cultures, or even the connection between humans and nature, I want artists to capture the depth and significance of these bonds.
Artists can interpret this theme in various ways, such as exploring emotional connections, shared experiences, the power of empathy, or the beauty of human relationships. They can delve into the struggles and triumphs of forming connections, the impact of technology on human interaction, or the longing for meaningful connections in a fast-paced world. The possibilities are vast, allowing artists to express their unique perspectives and visions on the theme of connection.
Participants are encouraged to experiment with different artistic styles to bring their ideas to life. The key is to convey the essence of connection through compelling visuals and thought-provoking artistic expressions.
Remember, connection is a universal theme that resonates with everyone, so artists have the opportunity to create something that not only showcases their talent but also speaks to the shared human experience. Let your creativity flow and celebrate the profound and meaningful connections that make us who we are.’

How is your final artwork related to the prompt?
— My final artwork is a short story following the main character Zoe, as she navigates what connection is in relation to people she knows like her husband and neighbour as well as strangers from different backgrounds and ages. I hopefully painted a relatable and vivid picture of what connection can look like through the use of descriptive imagery and words. I also used colloquial phrases familiar to most and tried to make it as relatable and personable as possible. The prompter encouraged exploring “emotional connections, shared experiences, the power of empathy, or the beauty of human relationships… the longing for meaningful connections in a fast-paced world ” and I think I did this in my own unique way in my short story.

Why did you choose this prompt?
— I chose this prompt because I myself have been thinking about connection. What role does technology play in our lives? Does it really help us to connect? Especially with the pandemic and the loss of lives, we realized how important face-to-face contact is and that nothing, not even technology can replace that. This prompt spoke to me because connection is a huge part of the human experience and no matter how you are or how you’ve grown up, we all want to be loved and feel accepted, belong and connected to others. And my love of touching people through the written word made this prompt the perfect one for me.

Explain more your creative process:
— I initially wrote a brief outline of the elements I wanted the story to have, for example, the main character, her name which means Life which was important for the theme of connection, the plot being a day in the life, the use of the present tense, the way she speaks and the kind of people she would meet on this day.
I could have written it as a typical story in the past tense but it wouldn’t carry as much weight as it would in the present tense which makes the reader feel like they’re right there with her seeing things as they happen.
I was inspired by the K-drama The Fabulous for the main character’s profession which is in the fashion industry, American bloggers for the day in the life plot, my own experience meeting over 50 new people since the beginning of the year and how fiction perfectly portrays life through a lens that doesn’t make you too uncomfortable but is relatable and plausible.
