Seed of the Sea

This artwork is the final submission from the artist Yukkin for the ‘Humanity’ event by the Faerian gallery. The artist created this piece in 3 days, inspired by a prompt that was submitted by the public. In a unique twist, instead of being interpreted by an AI, this time the prompt was brought to life by a human artist. The entire creative process was livestreamed online and at the NFC Lisboa event.

Artist’s Description

Prompt by PoUpA (Twitter: PoUpA)
— ‘A magical goddess who spreads love and nature to everything she touches’
Was AI used?
— No

How is your final artwork related to the prompt?
— I went for direct reference to touch and the use of hands to spread love and nature. Plants sprout from the hand and nurture a heart plant above the sea cave. The goddess resides in a space between water, earth and clouds and yet someone has found a connection to them and sits in a boat in front. The goddess does not have a specific mouth directly but the boat in front is shaped like a big grin, sharing their joy and love. Aside from creating an face and hand for a goddess I honed in on the nature aspect and by extension the love element derived from the therapeutic and comforting effects of nature.

Why did you choose this prompt?
— I was drawn to the idea of a nurturing divine being and nature. I love to make art combining imagery of nature with human forms and abstracting them.

Explain more your creative process:
— Time was a key factor as I had other commitments during the day Tuesday and Thursday. This caused be to have to reign in my vision from having two hands to just one and to forgo doing embroidered eyes for logistical difficulties and ditch making free standing lace for lack of experience. I knew from the start I wanted some hands, face and to use depth hence the decision to build the creation in a box. I had intended to use more layers of paper cutout but instead felt the face having depth would look better.
